Zoology

Mission:

    • To excel in both teaching and cutting edge of scientific research to explain how molecules, genes, organisms, and ecosystems function and affect human health outcomes.
    • To instill students with an appreciation of the many facets that make up Zoological sciences.
    • To continuously evaluate our performance against National and International benchmarks and to develop dynamic programmes according to the need of the society leading to global tie-ups to meet our stakeholders and students requirements.

Vision :  

Providing educational  opportunities  to aspiring students with a view to imbibe the essential concepts along with emergent developments in the chosen fields of study, instilling the mindset  and measures  for cultural and social upliftment and contributing to the national paradigm of collective responsibility in the path towards growth and prosperity.

Genesis:

Department of Zoology, Annamalai University was found in the year 1931 under the stewardship of the legendary teacher and outstanding researcher Prof. R. V. Seshaiya to teach ancillary courses.  Subsequently, in 1932 it became a self sufficient and independent teaching department.  Under the leaderships of great visionary professors such as Prof. R. V. Seshaiya, Prof. Dr. V. P. Govindan, Prof. Dr. Sankaramurthy and their brilliant successors, the department flourished well as one of the leading pioneers among the teaching and  research departments of Zoology in the country. The Department has been awarded UGC-SAP and  DST-FIST programmes.

Presently Department is equipped with ICT enabled class rooms and well equipped teaching laboratories and state of art research labs.  It also has a well equipped computer lab having internet facilities.  The curriculum is based on TANCHE recommendation in  to incorporate recent advancement  in Zoology and also  to equip the students to acquire necessary  skills to complete for the job opportunities as well as competition examinations at national level. The Department hosts a very good Zoological museum, which is the centre of attraction not only for the academicians but also the general public. Department of Zoology has a well established departmental library comprising around - 6400 volume of books.
